Plant From Outer Space

As a computer guy (some would say addict) and with the almost ubiquitous presence of the web and tv around, I sometimes get the impression of the world being just a click away.
Our holiday reminded me again that at least sometimes it's important to really be there. Otherwise I never would have seen this incredible plant.

  • Where does this kind of plant grow? I've never seen anything like it.

  • I found it in the dunes near the beach on Kos. After some research I think it's called "Stranddistel" (="beach thistle", official english name seems to be "Sea Holly", biol. name: Eryngium maritimum). It's supposed to be growing in dunes near the sea esp. in the Mediterranean Sea.
Unfortunately the plant, which was presumably very common has become very rare due to the ongoing destruction of the coastal regions. What a shame.
