Intermezzo - The Mouse

The nice thing about these abstract pictures is that I can choose almost any title and really don't have to worry about it being a fitting title or not :-).
As it's not really obvious how this kind of picture is created, here's how I did it: I set up an incense stick, which produces thick and heavy smoke, in front of a black cardboard screen. Then I set up two desktop lamps: one to the right and one to the left of the camera, pointing straight at the smoke. Then I started shooting hundreds of pictures of the smoke. After the shooting I chose the pictures that had some sharp outlines and nicely defined shapes in them. Which left me with about ten out of three hundred pictures.
I loaded the resulting pictures in GIMP, cleaned up the noise, inverted them, increased sharpness and contrast and added a colour gradient. For a much better description please refer to this great tutorial at photocritic.com.

Taking these pictures is far from original, since there are so many out there already. But it's fun especially during the winter, when going outside isn't.

  • Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how you captured these images. As for the titles, half the fun is trying to see what you see. In this one, I can't find the mouse, but I do see a racecar.
